Boosting Your Milk Supply: The Real Deal

Let’s be honest—when you’re trying to increase your milk supply, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed by all the advice out there. “Drink this tea!” “Eat these cookies!” “Try this magic supplement!” It can feel like there’s some secret everyone knows but you.

Here’s the truth: there is no magical product, food, or drink that will suddenly make your milk supply skyrocket. And that’s okay. The good news? The answer is much simpler than you think—it all comes down to consistency, understanding how your body works, and staying connected with your baby.

This post is here to give you the real deal, with tips you can trust, a little love, and the reminder that you and your baby are in this together.

Milk Supply 101: It’s All About Supply and Demand

Here’s how it works: the more milk you remove from your breasts, the more milk your body will make. It’s that simple. If milk sits in your breasts for too long without being removed, your body gets the signal that it doesn’t need to make as much.

Think of it like ordering pizza. If you order two pizzas every night but only eat one, eventually, the pizza place will stop delivering so many. Your milk production works the same way—when you remove milk consistently, your body keeps making more.

What Actually Works to Boost Milk Supply?

1. Frequent and Thorough Milk Removal

• Nurse or pump every 2-3 hours, even if you don’t think there’s much milk.

• Make sure your baby is latched well (a shallow latch might not empty the breast).

• If you’re pumping, double-check your flange size (trust me, this can make a HUGE difference).

2. Skin-to-Skin Time

Skin-to-skin contact isn’t just for bonding—it’s also powerful for milk production. When your baby is close, your body releases oxytocin, the “love hormone,” which helps trigger letdowns and supports milk production. Spend time holding your baby skin-to-skin as often as you can, especially in the early days.

3. Infant Bonding

Babies thrive on connection, and so do you! Snuggle, cuddle, and spend time bonding with your little one. This connection not only helps your baby feel safe and calm, but it also encourages your body to make milk.

4. Power Pumping

  • Power pumping mimics the way babies cluster feed during growth spurts, signaling your body to produce more milk. It’s like giving your supply a little nudge.

  • Try this: Pump for 20 minutes, rest for 10, pump for another 10, rest for 10, and pump again for a final 10 minutes. It can be tiring, but it’s worth it.

5. Nighttime Feeds or Pumps

Prolactin, the hormone responsible for milk production, peaks at night. Adding a late-night nursing or pumping session can work wonders.

6. Stay Hydrated and Eat Enough

While there’s no magic food, your body needs fuel to make milk. Drink water, eat balanced meals, and give yourself grace if you’re not perfect.

7. Be Patient

This isn’t an overnight fix—it takes time for your body to catch up. Stick with it, and don’t be afraid to ask for help if you need it.

A Little Encouragement From Us to You!

I see you. You’re tired, you’re trying your best, and you’re juggling a million things. Consistency isn’t always easy, especially when life is demanding so much of you.

Here’s the thing: every ounce you make is a gift to your baby. Whether you’re nursing, pumping, or both, you’re already doing something amazing.

And remember, it’s not just about the milk. The bonding, the snuggles, and the connection you’re building with your baby are just as valuable. Skin-to-skin cuddles, gazing into your baby’s eyes while nursing, or even those quiet moments during a pumping session—all of it matters.

What NOT to Do:

• Don’t fall for products claiming to “fix” your supply. They’re not the answer.

• Don’t beat yourself up if your supply doesn’t meet someone else’s expectations. Every parent’s journey is different.

You’ve Got This, mama!

Building your milk supply is all about removing milk regularly, staying connected with your baby, and trusting the process. There’s no quick fix, but with consistency, love, and patience, you’ll see results.
